English 101.10 -- Language and Composition I

Schedule

Papers will be due approximately every two weeks, with several weeks at the end of the semester for revising the final portfolio..

This schedule may be subject to change. You should check it often.

Peer Response refers to formal peer response days where you will follow the class format for responding to each other's writing.

Workshop refers to class time set aside for working on your writing individually or in groups. Workshop time also includes one-on-one interaction with your instructor or whole class activities that are tailored to the specific needs of the class. This time may also include daily writing activities.

Week 1 Unit One: Getting Started with the Elements of Content
M 1/12 Introductions, Course Overview. In class writing. Assigned reading: Syllabus and Course Guide.
T Baseline Writing Assessment. Assigned reading: "The Reading and Writing Process", pg 1-25 in the Mercury Reader (MR).
W Elements of Content activity. Turn in lists via instructor folders. Other invention work. Paper One assigned. Bring a rough draft to class next time.
R Introduction to Peer Response. Keep revising and bringing new drafts to class every day until the paper is due. Pick an essay from Section One of the RedBird Reader and bring a response to class.
F Intro to WebBoard. Post your reading response online.
Week 2
M 1/19 M.L.King Holiday - No Class
T Description activity. Strategies for introductions. Read and discuss "Writer's Block" (MR pg. 95). Assignment: Read pg 41-50 in the Course Guide for this Friday, and also keep working on your drafts.
W Peer Response and Workshop time.
R Copy Editing.
F Final Unit Draft Due.
Week 3 Unit Two: Considering Audience
M 1/26

Activity: "Coaching" Course Guide pg 41-50. Introduction to Audience. Brainstorm audiences and related topics. Begin a discovery draft and bring it to class on Tuesday.

This week, 3 webboard posts per week begins: These can be responses to readings, about your papers, responses to posts from other class members, or about other topics you chose to introduce, etc. Your replies to other class members should address the content of their posts (ie, offer an example or counter-example, ask a question, etc. Our goal is to try to get several conversations going online.).

Assignment: find an advertisement and bring a copy of it to class. It can be online if you don't subscribe to magazines or newspapers. Do some reflection before class to see if you can figure out the strategies being used and who the ads might be trying to target. We will share and discuss these next time.

T Discuss advertisements. Read section III in RR and post response by next Tuessday (skim all of the essays, but pick one to read). Write a 1-2 page description of the intended audience for your paper.
W Share audience profiles. Take time to read and help each other fine-tune these.
R Peer Response
F Citing sources; integrating quotes. Read MR pg 97-116 by Monday. Search for sources. Bring a full-length draft for Monday, complete with conclusion.
Week 4
M 2/2 Audience Activity. Conclusions. Read info on Paraphrase and Quotations.
T Workshop.
W Final Peer response.
R Copy editing.
F Paper two due. For Unit 3, Identify a topic. Introduction to Composer. Fonts and colors.
Week 5 Unit 3: Writing for the Web Class Project
M 2/9 The anatomy of a URL. Making links. Begin a rough draft of the text in Word (but use spaces between what will be different pages on the site, and use headings.
T Images and tables. Thinking hypertextually. Intro to basic elements of design. Content sketch. Assignment: Read "From Pencils to Pixels" for next Monday. Keep working on content.
W Peer response and revision of *content*. Bring your discovery or rough draft to class.
R Hypertext discussion continued. Interesting HTML tidbits. Workshop time.

Week 6
M 2/16 Workshop time. Whole class review of progress. Goals for this week.
T Workshop time. Peer response in groups.
W Workshop time.
R Copy editing.
F Unit 3 will be due next Tuesday, at which time we'll also do the Intro to Forums for Unit 4. please be thinking ahead about topics. *Make sure* you read some of the essays in section III of the RedBird Reader. There are several awesome papers there that will give you some creative ideas for the sorts of things you can do.
Week 7 Unit 4: Writing for Forums
M 2/23 Finish Websites
T Unit 3 Due. Intro to Unit 4.
W Brainstorm topics/forums. Begin draft.
R Bring a copy of your forum to class. Forum analysis activity. Assignment: Pick an essay in the MR that has not been assigned and post a response.

Week 8  
M 3/1 Workshop
T Assignment: Read and respond to a paper in section IV of RR.Overview of Paper 5. Dependng on your topic, you might want to do some first-hand research (surveys, observations, interviews) over Spring break.

Week 9 Spring Break-- No Class March 8-12
Week 10 Unit 5: Using Primary Research
M 3/15 Unit 4 due. Brainstorm topics for Unit 5. Discuss survey questions and observational data. Assignment: Review Section IV in RedBird Reader and post responses. Bring prelimary topic proposal to class next time.
T Peer assistance with finding a direction and writing questions. Develop a plan for collecting data.
W Peer response to rough draft. Revision.

Week 11 Unit 6: Reflective Analysis of Your Writing
M 3/22 Introduction to Unit 6 and prompts. Continue collecting data and working on Unit 5 at home.
T In class activity: Online writing survey. Begin drafting.
W Peer response to Unit 6 drafts
R Discuss pg 123-127 in the RedBird Reader.
F Unit 6 first final draft due (post to WebBoard)-- revised unit 6 due with portfolio.
Week 12
M 3/29 Peer response to Unit 5.
T Global Revision Strategies. New beginning activity. Read Revision in MR pg 29-46.

Week 13

Revising for the Final Portfolio

M 4/5

Workshoping individual drafts with whole class, peer responding, in-class exercises, and individual conferences for rest of semester. You will each sign up for a day to talk about your revisions, and to share your draft with the class. It will be a whole-class workshop focused on one of your papers (or two, if you can direct the class to specific portions of the draft on which you would like feedback.)

Please note that the Portfolio Grading Standards include your in-class participation and feedback to others. Therefore, missing a workshop day, even if it is not your own, will effect your grade.
